Ukichiro Nakaya was the first physicist in the world to successfully create snow crystals artificially, and was a world-class researcher in the field of low-temperature science. Nakaya Ukichiro Museum of Snow and Ice was established in his honor.
In the courtyard is a work entitled "Greenland Glacier Field" by Nakaya Ukichiro's second sister, Fujinika Nakaya, an artist known for her "fog sculptures" and other works. It is covered with approximately 60 tons of stones brought from a glacier in northern Greenland.
